What inspired Marimekko?
They then designed and sold a small collection of simple dresses (Marimekko means ‘Mary dress’). Armi and Viljo’s love of colour and contrasting prints was inspired by Finland’s stark climate – there a huge differences between the seasons – no sunlight in the winter and 24 hours of sunshine in the summer.
